arrangements for the first annual reunion and banquet,
which was to take place at the Burnet House on
the evening of January 14th, and that the prospects were
for a delightful occasion and a large attendance.
The meeting then adjourned.
In accordance with the resolution passed at the annual
meeting in October, 1875, the first annual banquet of
the Society was held at the Burnet House on the
evening of the second Friday in January, (the 14th)
1876. The Executive Committee had charge of the
entertainment, and the result of their work was a grand
success. The supper table was laid in the small
dining room of the hotel, and at 8 o'clock about fifty
members of the Society sat down to enjoy the
substantials and dainties with which the board was
heavily laden.
The supper room was handsomely adorned with living
plants, entwining vines and bright flowers.
Pendent over and in front of the mirrors, which stood at
either end of the room, in large letters, made of
evergreens, were the words, "THE ARMY," and "THE NAVY."
Baskets and pyramids of fragrant buds adorned the table.

The gentlemen who had charge of the arrangements for
the banquet did their work well, and when the
members assembled around the festal board, they
found that their Executive Committee had left
nothing undone that should have been done for their
enjoyment and pleasure. It was in fact an
elegant, select and choice entertainment, attended
by some of our most prominent citizens, who had
honored themselves and their country by the part
they took in the war, which, in its termination,
forever crushed out rebellion, and placed the
glorious Constitution of the United States upon a
rock that will be as lasting as time. Lawyers,
judges, merchants, doctors, bankers and gentlemen
retired from the arena of mercantile life, who
fought for "a common cause," were there to assemble
around the joyous board, and to revive the memories
of the days when they were Soldiers of the Union."
The early hour of half past seven were announced as the
time at which the banquet would commence, but it was
nine o'clock before the gentlemen sat down
