Richland Twp.
-
EUGENE GARAUN,
son of David and Philistine Garaun, was born in
Switzerland, May 9, 1837. His wife, daughter of
John and Elizabeth Peter, was born in Switzerland,
Feb. 22, 1843. They have one child, Emile.
Mr. Garaun came to Allen County in 1862; his
parents came in 1869, and her parents in 1852. He
has one brother, William, and three sisters -
Emile, Julia and Josephine. His wife is
one of a family of seven - Elise, Marian, Frederick,
Henry, Charles, Emile and Mary.

Richland Twp.

GEORGE W. GOBLE,
son of Daniel and Elizabeth and brother of
Ebenezer, John, Jane, Doud, and Josephus, was
born in Washington county, Penn., Mar. 20, 1819, and at
the age of 15 came with his parents to Allen County.
He married Jane Allison, who was born in
Muskingum County, Sept. 21, 1826. Her parents,
Alexander and Nancy Alison, came from Zanesville to
this county in 1833. The children of George W.
and Jane Goble are Ebenezer B., Allen B.,
Martha, Jane and Charles. Mrs. Goble's
brothers and sisters are Alexander, Mary, Margaret
J., Sarah, Julia, Ann, Robert, Alvira, and
Samantha. Mr. Goble has held the offices of
county commissioner, justice of the peace, township
clerk and constable, and was the first postmaster in the
township. His father was one of the first justices
of t he peace, and he and Mr. De Ford owned the
first horses that were brought into the township.
De Ford owned the first saw mill and grist mill
in the township. When water failed the grist mill
was run by horse-power.

Richland Twp. -
REV. JOHN GOBLE
is a son of Daniel L. and Elizabeth Goble, who
came to this county from Pennsylvania in 1834.
Their children are, Ebenezer, John, George, Jane,
Doud, and Josephus. John was born in
Washington County, Pennsylvania, Apr. 5, 1817, and came
to Allen County in 1835. His wife, Sarah Jane,
daughter of Jesse and Mary Ann Davis, was born in
Harrison County, Aug. 16, 1831. His children are:
Thaddeus L., Algernon Doud, Robert L., Susan Jane,
Daniel and Calvin.

Sugar
Creek Twp. -
BENJAMIN GRIFFITHS
is a son of Joseph and Jane, and brother of
Joseph, Elenor, Mary, Evan and Ebenezer Griffiths.
He was born in Butler County in 1829, and came to Allen
County in 1836 with his parents. "In those days
the nearest grain markets were at Lake Erie and the Ohio
River; therefore farmers raised barely grain enough to
supply their families with bread and salt. There
was a water mill on Hog creek, but when the water was
low we had to go to Sidney, or Piqua, to mill.
There was plenty of wild game." Mrs. Griffiths
was Julia Ann Aumspaucher, born in Fairfield
County, 1830. They have eight children -
Vincent (deceased) Isaac Newton (deceased),
Jason M., Ida C., Herbert G. (deceased),
Sarah Jane, Josepine and Henderson F.
Mrs. G. is a daughter of George and Rebecca
Aumspaucher whose children are Mahala, Julia Ann,
Clara, John, Samuel and Jessie.

Ottawa Twp. -
JOHN P. HALLER held the
office of County Surveyor nine years was County Auditor
four years, and has served as City Engineer of the city
of Lima. He was born in Franklin County, Penn.,
Feb. 9, 1827, and came to Allen County with his parents,
Samuel and Elizabeth Haller, in 1839.
Children of Samuel and Elizabeth Haller: Jacob
B., Samuel, Elizabeth, Catharine and John P.
His wife is Elizabeth, daughter of Christian
and Elizabeth Koser, whose children are Susan,
Jacob, Henry, Catharine, Elias, Leah, Elizabeth and
Sarah. Mrs. Haller was born in Franklin
County, Penn., Dec. 31, 1831. Mr. Haller's
parents resided successively in Lancaster and Franklin
Counties, Penn., and Licking, Fairfield and Allen
Counties, Ohio. Mrs. Haller's parents still
reside in Franklin County, Penn. Children of
John P. and Elizabeth Haller: Sylvia Ann, Emma
Elizabeth, Samuel Christian, Jane Golay, William Fell
(deceased), and Henry Sanford.

Richmond
Twp. -
ANDREW HAUENSTEIN
was born Jan. 19, 1844, at Degerfelden, Switzerland, and
in 1856 came with his parents, Henry and Fanny
Hauenstein, from Switzerland to Allen County,
Ohio. His wife was born in this township a. 18,
1851. She was Barbara Steiner and is sister
to David Steiner, and daughter of Christian
and Barbara. Mr. Haunstein has two
brothers, John and William and two sisters
Emma and Fanny. Mr. H. has held
the office of township clerk.

Marion Twp. -
NELSON HAYES was born
in Essex County, New York, Jan. 12, 1809, came to Allen
County in 1840, and settled on the farm now occupied by
him. His wife was Sally Jones, daughter of
Alanson and Rhoda (Slater) Jones. She was
born in Essex County, New York, July 20, 1808, and died
on the old homestead in Allen County, Oct. 21, 1842.
They have five children - Alexis P., Juliette
C., Clarinda E., Russell J. and Isaac B.
Mr. Hayes' parents removed to Allen County in 1844.
Their children are Rhoda, Alanson, Flavilla, Nelson,
Enos, David, Milo, Ann and Rosetta. Mrs.
Hayes' parents died in Essex County, New York.
They had ten children - Russell, Sarah, William,
Harry, Bushrod, Permelia, Eunice, Ann, Van Rensselaer
and Charles. Mr. Hayes was Township Clerk
three years.

WILLIAM HUBER
is a native of Wurtemburg, Germany. In 1835, at
the age of 17, he came to Allen County with his parents,
Frederick and Barbara Huber. His brothers
and sisters are Charles, Jacob, Theresa, Henry
and Caroline. His wife was born in England
in 1824. She is a daughter of Edward and Emily
Austin, and is one of a family of nine - Emily,
Mary A., Margaret, Sarah, Eliza, Charlotte, George, John,
and lenora. Mr. Huber has eleven children -
Lewis w., Eli, Erastus, Mary, E___, Nancy, Oscar,
Clermont, Alice E., Ida A., and Sally A.
Mr. Huber has been township trustee fourteen
years.

LEWIS HUFFMAN
was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, Dec. 25,
1817, and removed to Allen County in 1848. His
wife was Anna Stewart, daughter of Robert and
Anna Stewart. She was born in Licking County,
Dec. 20, 1830. Their children are, Sarah A.,
Elizabeth A., Frank A., Guy S., Kate L., Mary J.,
and Lulu. By his first marriage, Mr.
Huffman has two children - Scott F. and
John W. Mr. Huffman has three brothers and two
sisters - David, Samuel, Lydia, Hanah, and
William. Mrs. Huffman is one of a
family of ten - George Jacob, Elizabeth, Anna, John,
Angeline, Ruth, Lavina, Virgil, and Benjamin.

Jackson Twp. -
HORACE GILBERT and
his wife are natives of Lower Canada. She was born
Aug. 20, 1809. Her parents were Hezekiah and
Lydia Wood. In the year 1836, Mr. Gilbert's
parents, Josiah and Chloe Gilbert, came from New
York, and settled in Allen County. Four years
later, at the age of 35. Mr. Gilbert came
to this county. Mr. G. has eight brothers
and sisters - Hammond, Joel, Harlow, Richard, Hollis,
Bethiah, Charity and Helen. Mrs. G.
is one of a family of six - Thomas, Peter, Joel,
John, Levina and Sarah. Mr. and Mrs.
Gilbert are the parents of five children -
Parthenia, Melissa, Laura, Miranda and Marantha.

Jackson Twp. -
PHILIP M. HALL, son of
Joseph W. and Mary Hall, and brother of Henry
H. Hall, was born in this county, Sept. 22, 1837.
He married Hannah C., daughter of Isaac and
Clarissa Fridley. She was born July 18, 1844,
in Pickaway County. Their children are Clara
(deceased), Norville F., Edwin P., Eugene T., and
Mary. Mr. Hall's parents came
to this county, from Pickaway County, in 1832.
Mrs. Hall's brothers and sisters are Jane,
Kate, Melvina, Clara, William,
Edwin and Alma. Mr. Hall
was township clerk from 1862 and 1868.

DAVID HARNER, JR.,
son of David and Lucetta, Harner, was born in
Center County, Pennsylvania, Sept. 2, 1851, and came
with his parents to this county, in 1872. The
names of his brothers and sisters are Margaret,
Jacob, Mary J., Catherine, Elizabeth and Joseph.

SIMON HERR
was born at Bluffton, in this county, on the 17th of
April, 1851. His parents, Christian and
Catharina Herr, are from Europe. Their
children are John, Fannie, Catharine, Christian,
Simon, Peter, David and Annie. Mr. Herr's
wife is a daughter of Darius and Fanny Musser.

CYRUS H. HOOVER
was born in Trumbull County, Mar. 5, 1822. His
parents, Joseph and Caroline Hoover, came to this
county from Trumbull County, in 1833. Mrs.
Hoover's parents are Charles and Elizabeth Post.
She was born in Knox County, Aug. 7, 1827.
Their children are Libbie E., Mary E., Charles A.,
Kate P., Bryant G., Minnie L. Forence, and
Mattie.
