Preble County was formed in 1808 from parts of Montgomery and Butler Counties.  The county seat is at Eaton.  It was named after Commodore Edward Preble, of the U. S. Navy, who had acquired fame two years before in the Tripolitan war and had acquired honor in the Revolutionary War.

The first permanent settlement was begun in 1798.  The first meeting of county commissioners was held at the home of Samuel Hawkins June 23, 1808, and first court of common pleas was held at the Samuel Hawkins' home in Eaton, August 23, 1808.  The appointed commissioners were: Aaron Harlin, Ichabod B. Halsey and Ichabod Comin.  Mar. 4, 1812 the following were ordered to receive subscriptions for the purpose of building a court house: Ar. Miller, Paul Larsh, Thos. Massie, as. Ireland, Alex. Lanier, Edward D. Hale, Peter Harter and Frederick Miller.  It was not built until 1816.
