In writing this sketch of my army life, I desire to say that I do so at the earnest request of our worthy secretary, Robert F. Bartlett, who has so kindly undertaken the task of making out a new Roster of the Regiment.  I must of necessity be brief, so as not to encumber the Roster too much with that which will be of personal character, consequently I will have to omit many incidents of my army life, both in the Mexican War and that of the Rebellion, to which I would be pleased to refer, if time and space would permit.
