STATE NEWS.
Lieutenant William PORTER, of Fifth
Cavalry, formerly on General ROUSEAU's staff, accidentally
wounded at Gallatin, Tenn., on the 22nd of February, had his leg
amputated Thursday, and died at 7 P.M., from the effects of the
operation. HE was from Oxford, Ohio. |

--The deed made by Alexander Flemming to Harriet F.
Flemming was sustained by the District Court.
--One hundred and sixty-seven dollars have been subscribed by the
citizens toward relieving the suffering poor of Ireland.
--Dr. Chapman, of the Episcopal Church, accompanied by Miss
Lucy Bakewell and Miss Sophia Thomas, started last Saturday
night for Sacramento, Ca.
--The Will of Richard J. Decker was probated Saturday. To
his wife deceased leaves all of his real and personal property, and
appoints her as administratrix.
--The Will of Vincent Brown, deceased, probated Saturday,
stipulates that all of his property, both real and personal, shall be
divided between his two sons, Ralph and Theodore.
The estate consists of 192 acres of land in Ross Township.
--The condition of the two sons of Dr. Reed of Jones' Station,
who were nearly run over by the cars last Friday, was not materially
changed yesterday. It is feared that Greeley, the oldest of
the boys, has sustained some internal injuries which may go bad with
him.
--In the Will of Jacob Betz, which was admitted to probate
Saturday, deceased devises that one-eighty of his property be divided
between the following named persons: Jacob Betz, John Betz,
Adam, Betz, Martin Betz, Catharine Haub, Margaret Ferning, Maria Betz.
Martin Betz was appointed administrator.
--Last Saturday was one of unusual interest to the teachers from the
southwestern portion of the State. A goodly number were assembled
in BEckett's Hall, and the exercises partook of a good deal of
sparkling wit, humor, and literary culture. The meeting, after
being called to order by Mr. McCalmont, of College Hill, Mr.
James E. Giffen President of the Board of Education, bade them a
cordial welcome. Mr. W. C. Potts, of Batavia, and Mr.
Bryant, of Hamilton County, were elected temporary Secretary and
Assistant Secretary to ascertain the address of each teacher present.
