ADAMS COUNTY was formed in 1797 and was one of the original counties.  Parts of the county were taken to form parts of Brown, Highland and Hocking Counties.  West Union is the county Seat.

 Gen. Nathaniel Massie
was anxious to effect a settlement in the Adams County area so he offered land to the first twenty-five persons that would join him in making a settlement here.  The agreement was made Dec. 1, 1790.  Thos who signed were:

When the first court was organized July 1798 the commissioners appointed were:  James Cott, Henry Massie and Joseph Darlington and the assessors appointed were:  Simeon Reeder, Aaron Moore, Noble Grimes, James Edison, Thomas Dick and John Watts.
